Students Learn Lifesaving Skills

When faced with a medical emergency or illness, several of our middle/high school students can have active roles in saving someone’s life. Medical Club members participated in after school trainings on March 11 and 12 that were organized by advisors Tanya Suleski and Renee Sheer, and facilitated by Deanna Wilcox, Pat Wagner, and Justin Marks, members of the Warsaw Fire Department and Rescue Squad.
During the first training, students learned how to administer Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) to a patient and successfully use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) to restore heart rhythm to someone in sudden cardiac arrest. Students received hands-on practice by using training mannequins. The second day of training focused on adult and pediatric first aid. The instructors taught students how to treat cuts and burns, and apply a tourniquet, if needed. As part of the training, the group also learned how to perform the Heimlich maneuver on adults and assist infants who are choking. This was a great learning opportunity for students who might be considering careers in healthcare and/or want the training needed to assist in an emergency situation.
